Instagram's Two AI Labels: Profile Badge vs. Post Tag
An account-level AI creator badge you toggle off, and a per-post AI info tag driven by file metadata. How to tell which one you have, and fix it.
If you’ve searched for how to get an AI label off Instagram, you’ve probably found advice that didn’t work: steps about a profile setting when your problem is on a single post, or metadata instructions when what you’re looking at is a badge under your name.
That’s because Instagram runs two completely separate AI labels. They look related, they use similar wording, and they have nothing to do with each other. Different triggers, different fixes. Getting the wrong one is why most advice fails.

The AI creator badge is a setting, not a verdict
Instagram introduced the AI creator designation in May 2026. It lets creators who regularly use AI tools declare that on their profile. It sits alongside the bio and signals that the account’s output is AI-assisted.
The important part: it’s a toggle you control. Nobody analysed your posts and assigned it. It appears because it was switched on, and it disappears when it’s switched off, under Edit profile. There’s no appeal, no review, no waiting period, because there was never a judgement in the first place.

The AI info tag is automatic, and it reads your file
This one is genuinely out of your hands at upload time. When you post, Instagram parses the file and looks for provenance data, chiefly C2PA Content Credentials, the signed “made with AI” record that image and video tools write on export, plus IPTC metadata fields marking the file as algorithmically generated.
Find that record, apply the tag. No human involved, no assessment of how much of the work was yours.
This is why the tag catches cases that feel unfair: a real photo where you used AI background removal, a portrait you ran through an AI cleanup tool, a shot exported from an editor that writes credentials by default. Because it’s file-driven, the fix is file-level: rebuild the file so the credential isn’t carried into it, then upload the clean copy. Cropping, filtering and re-saving change how the image looks, not what it carries, which is why they don’t work.
Why the confusion is so common
The two labels overlap in every way that matters for search and none of the ways that matter for fixing them:
- Both say “AI” in roughly the same visual language.
- Both appeared within months of each other in 2026.
- Both get described as “the Instagram AI label” in tutorials and videos.
So someone with a badge problem follows metadata instructions and gets nowhere. Someone with a tagged post toggles a profile setting and watches the tag stay exactly where it was. Can you have both at once?

They’re separate systems, so fixing one does not fix the other. They are not entirely unrelated, though: on accounts where the badge appeared without a toggle, it is reported to follow Meta’s classification of the account, and consistently posting files that trigger the per-post tag is what reinforces that. In that case the post labels are upstream of the badge.
